The Bureau of Justice Statistics is the primary statistical agency of the U.S. Department of Justice and the nation’s leading source for criminal justice data. BJS collects, analyzes and publishes information on a broad range of topics, including crime victimization, law enforcement, courts and sentencing, corrections, recidivism, and the characteristics of offenders and victims. Key programs include the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), which captures crimes both reported and unreported to police, as well as data on jails, prisons, probation and parole populations. BJS also provides data analysis tools, interactive dashboards and publicly downloadable data sets.
