The Stanford Open Policing Project collects, standardizes, and publishes data on vehicle and pedestrian stops by law enforcement agencies across the United States. The dataset comprises over 200 million traffic stop records gathered from dozens of state and local police departments through hundreds of public records requests. Each record includes details such as the location and time of the stop, the race, age, and sex of the subject, the reason for the stop, whether a search was conducted, and the outcome (warning, citation, arrest, etc.). The project’s primary research focus is identifying racial disparities in policing — including findings that Black and Hispanic drivers were disproportionately searched compared to white drivers. Data is freely available for download in CSV and RDS formats and is accompanied by academic publications, statistical tutorials, and interactive exploration tools.
