The Crime Index, built by Jeff Asher and AH Datalytics, pulls monthly data directly from hundreds of agencies, usually with about a 45-day lag, giving journalists a much faster read on national trends (national FBI estimates typically aren’t published until more than a year after the fact). The Current Trends section aggregates monthly data from 566 agencies covering about 117 million people — a sample designed to track national patterns in near real time. The Historical Data Library contains official annual FBI data back to the 1930s for some agencies. The two aren’t directly comparable, so be careful not to mix them in a single trend line.
